From September, guided tours of the equestrian monument of Gattamelata located in Padua in the square in front of the Basilica of Sant'Antonio will resume.
The bronze sculpture created by Donatello and among the greatest Renaissance masterpieces, has been under restoration for over a year, but thanks to the scaffoldings on which the restorers are working, it is now visible up close to the public thanks to a program of guided tours by art history experts.
Gattamelata (1370-1443) was in his time a formidable leader in the service of the Republic of Venice, and the statue was commissioned upon his death by his family. Donatello was inspired for the creation by the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, but adopted innovative technical and artistic solutions and created the first large bronze statue after those of the late Roman era.
The restoration of the monument now represents an opportunity not to be missed for lovers of art history and of our city.
